Bought this recently for my second child's toys. I have an earlier version of this toy chest that does not have the second shelf, just a single platform across the top of the box. A few observations:
1. The quality of both seems to be very good.
2. The new one seems to be bigger (wider across the front).
3. Yes, the new one is in two pieces and must be screwed together, but that was not a problem. It took about five minutes, tops. I recommend using a drill to drill a small pilot hole for the screws. The two pieces fit together snugly at this time.
4. The threads of the screws are exposed inside the toy box, but I think it would be very hard for a child to injure himself on these screws. If you are worried, you could cover the threads with masking or electrical tape.
5. You can see outlines of the toys through this chest, but I do not believe that the plastic is thinner than previous versions. This is more a result of the color of the plastic than the thickness of the plastic. The new chest is white while our old one is a darker tan color.
In summation, this is a large, well-built toy chest that holds lots of toys, big and small. My soon-to-be toddler loves to just stand there and get all the toys out. Every night we put them back. Then repeat.

I love this toybox! We got it as a toybox for our living room. It is made of a sturdy plastic so spills are easy to wipe off. It is well designed in that it is bottom heavy even without toys and isn't easily knocked over. There are no sharp edges and the plastic is hollow so banging into it doesn't cause ouchies. There is a gap between the lid and the toy box so little fingers can get in there and easily lift the lid. The lid rolls easily back into the top and stays in place. Note that the shelf part doesn't have a solid back but it does have a high lip so books can't fall behind the toybox. The box comes as one solid piece, no assembly required.
One thing to note though, we got this a *lot* cheaper by going to Menards. I believe we paid $50 for this toy box with the red lid.

I was a bit concerned when I ordered this toy box because other reviews said it was cheaply made, however when the product arrived I was pleased to see that it was sturdy and well made. There is a LOT of usable space in this toy box. The bottom holds a lot of loose toys, and the shelves can store large books. My daughter is too small to open and close the lid yet, but it seems very easy for a bit bigger child to use. Overall I am extrememly pleased with the toy box. It was a bit more expensive than some others I looked at, but well worth the money!
